Advantages of using Cloud technology in the healthcare domain

Healthcare organizations are created to drive to provide health care services to the country and elsewhere. This industry isn’t expected to drive innovation in technology. That is the prerogative of the technology industry. Complexities associated with taking care of multiple stakeholder’s interests to produce effective results has met with failure.
How do you deliver effective IT healthcare services?
Cloud technology is seen as offering a solution. It is flexible as in one can keep back sensitive data and use its other capabilities. Areas where the cloud can be applied are:
Healthcare practice management
Electronic health records management
Insurance interaction
Electronic prescription management
Cloud services can be hired and one need not spend the entire time managing the infrastructure. Third party vendors will take care of the in-house or IT systems leaving the organization to focus on managing and delivering health care.
The latest trend that is “Bring Your Own Device” allows the professionals to bring their laptops, mobiles, and smartphones to use as computing devices. Security policies must be enforced to see that these devices are compatible with the policies of safety and security of the organization and protects data. Device may be compromised but there should be a mechanism in place to detect and eliminate the threat.
Patient data once secured can be accessed from anywhere making it easy for medical professionals.
Cloud when applied at a more fundamental level, can be used to help patient interaction like fixing appointments, staying in touch with patients, viewing medical records securely. The patient is given the right to grant control over who can access his data and this has been a revolutionary healthcare delivery.
There are several pitfalls that need to be considered too. Steps to mitigate them can be taken. Due to internet unavailability, the cloud service may be interrupted. There could also be a bandwidth issue however these can be rectified. The data centre should redundancy built in to mitigate such situations. When choosing a vendor, the service level agreements should be carefully read and negotiated. Appropriate penalties must be levied to punish poor performance.
Security is a concern for many using cloud. People still find it difficult to trust cloud services owing to lack of proper definitions of who has access to the data, from which locations can they use the service and other concerns cloud the capability.
Sufficient measures can be taken to prevent a breach and also take steps when a breach occurs. Such issues have happened in the past and one can learn from the mistakes of others. Using a hybrid approach allows to keep sensitive data in-house while putting other data in the network. Data encryption facilities are being used for confidentiality and maintenance of data integrity are being looked into.
The loopholes can be plugged to make the system seem more adaptable.
